
When both people are tired, appreciation is usually one of the first things to disappear.
He comes home exhausted. She has been dealing with her own day. Dinner gets made, things get paid for, children get sorted, the house keeps moving and everybody starts treating all of that effort like it just happens by itself.
That is when resentment creeps in.
A lot of men are actually quite easy to please in this area. They like knowing that what they do has been noticed.
A simple “Thank you for sorting that out” can land better than people realise.
Women need the same thing.
If she has spent the afternoon cooking, dealing with children or fixing things nobody else even knew needed fixing, noticing that matters.
You do not need to turn appreciation into a grand romantic production either.
Bring him his coffee the way he likes it.
Send her a message during the day just to say you appreciate how much she is doing.
If she is tired, tell her to sit down while you finish one job.
If he has had a rough day, give him twenty minutes to come in, change and breathe before handing him the next problem.
Buy his favourite snack when you are already at the shop.
Bring her tea without asking.
Tell the children, “Your dad worked hard for this,” or “Your mum has been doing a lot today.” Let them hear you respect each other.
And if one of you cooks, the other can clear up.
These things cost very little, but they change the atmosphere of a home.
The point is not to keep score.
It is to stop acting as though your partner’s effort is simply their job and therefore does not deserve thanks.
